In 1932, in the household of the poet Sheikh Nuri Sheikh Salih, a boy was born whose smile, the family said, made every heart lighter. His father named him Shahab: a shooting star. He grew into the man all of Kurdistan would call Xala, Uncle: a title no party can award, only a people.
He was a strategist who built an underground movement bead by bead, a teacher who carried mud with the laborers of Kirkuk, a defender of women's rights decades ahead of his time, and, at the end, a shield: one man who took the blame for thirty-one so that they would live and the revolution would rise again. It did. He said it would.
